The Habs battled for three sets against the Italian to secure their first qualification for the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 on Thursday.
He had never defeated Lorenzo Sonego on clay. Barred by the Italian (57th in the world) at Monte-Carlo and Roland-Garros in 2023, Ugo Humbert (15th in the world) took his revenge, playing the same trick on his opponent that Sonego had done to him last year in Monegasque land. More solid on serve, impeccable on break points (6/6 saved in the second set), more offensive (34 winning shots) than the Transalpine and well helped by the precision of his backhand, Humbert gradually got his hands on the meeting to achieve valuable success. In the quarter-final, Friday, the Frenchman will face Casper Ruud (8th), who defeated Hubert Hurkacz.
