Borussia Dortmund formalized the recruitment of Anthony Modeste, Monday August 8, from Cologne, to replace Sébastien Haller, who is undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.

Dortmund were in the hunt for a striker for this season after Haller was diagnosed with a malignant testicular tumor last month. He has since undergone surgery, but will be unavailable and sidelined for several months.

Several top strikers were considered for the job, including Memphis Depay, Mauro Icardi, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, but Dortmund opted for the 34-year-old Frenchman due to his familiarity with the Bundesliga.

The club’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl welcomed this recruitment, describing Modeste as “a seasoned professional who knows the Bundesliga very well, who scored 20 goals last season and who, with his profile, can take on exactly the role that our coach Edin Terzic envisions”.
