This Friday, August 2, at the Paris Olympic Games could go down in the history of French sport. Already a triple gold medalist (in the 400m medley, 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke), Léon Marchand is aiming for a fourth Olympic title in the 200m medley – final scheduled for 8:43pm. None French has never achieved such a performance individually (Jean-Claude Killy and Paul Masson won three gold medals in 1968 and 1896). Teddy Riner could also win a fourth Olympic title (including one in the team) and enter a little further into the judo legend. He should start his day around 11:30, competing in the 15th fight of the round of 16, in the +100 kg category. Follow our live feed.
The program of the day. It looks set to be very busy. Around 11 a.m., Romane Dicko in +78 kg will start her day on the tatamis, for the 11th fight of the eighth. The judoka, titled by teams in 2021 in Tokyo, is aiming for a gold medal in her category. Table tennis player Félix Lebrun will play for a place in the final against the Chinese Fan Zhendong at 11 a.m. Also to follow: the sailing final with Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon, that of Florent Manaudou in the 50 m freestyle (8:30 p.m.) and the essential Léon Marchand in the 200 m medley (8:43 p.m.) as well as the full schedule of the day’s events.
End of the road for the French mixed team archery team. The tricolor archers bowedborn in the eighth final against Italy (6-0), Friday morning, during the mixed team event. But there are still individual medals to be won on Saturday for Lisa Barbelin, and on Sunday for Baptiste Addis and Thomas Chirault.
A little Thursday for the Blues. After Wednesday’s sweep (eight medals including three gold), France didn’t really shine on Thursday. At 19, kayaker Titouan Castryck won silver in the slalom. The judokas Madeleine Malonga (-78kg) and Aurélien Diesse (-100kg) had a bad day, as did the team foil fencers. A small consolation prize with the victory of boxer Sofiane Oumiha in the quarter-finals (-63.5kg), synonymous with a guaranteed medal.
The feat of surfer Johanne Defay. This is the first major French performance of the day. On the wave of Teahupoo, in Tahiti, the Frenchwoman managed to beat the Olympic champion. She therefore reaches the semi-final of the competition.
Team sports to follow. Big program for the French teams, including the highly anticipated quarter-final between France and Argentina in men’s football (9 p.m.). Another discipline, same country: the French handball team absolutely must beat Argentina (11 a.m.) to believe in the quarter-finals. In volleyball, the Olympic champions are aiming for a 3/3 against Slovenia (5 p.m.), just like the basketball players against Germany (9 p.m.).
Athletics begins at the Stade de France, without Kevin Mayer. The athletics events begin in Saint-Denis, after the 20 km walk events on Thursday in the streets of Paris. Insufficiently recovered from his thigh injury, the world record holder and double world champion has given up on participating in the decathlon. Two Frenchmen will be entered in the 10,000 m final: Yann Schrub and Jimmy Gressier.
