France’s threats of sanctions against the United Kingdom, in the conflict between the two countries over fishing licenses, are “oversized” and “disproportionate”, alerted Friday, October 29 on franceinfo, Aymeric Chrzan, secretary general of the Union du mareyage français in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais). Fishmongers are wholesalers who buy fish products and sell them to traders and processors.

If Tuesday, November 2, London has not released ballast and issued more licenses to French boats, Paris will prohibit British ships from landing on the French coasts to sell the peaches and will strengthen customs controls.

“Our companies are in dire need of British products, which account for around 25-30% of our supplies.”, explains Aymeric Chrzan, who also specifies that imports of British fishery products “are superior to the totality of the products sold in the French auctions”. “The stakes are huge for the whole industry”, he warns, not only for the wholesalers but also for “processing and salting companies”. Of the 5,000 jobs linked to fishing in Boulogne-sur-Mer, 1,500 would be threatened immediately, according to him.

Aymeric Chrzan calls London to “respect engagements”, contained in the Brexit agreement, and to issue the licenses to the boats that await them. He calls on leaders to find “a measured response, and to quickly find solutions in the mutual interest” from France and the United Kingdom.
