The fighting is still intense and violent in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. At the heart of this chaos, thousands of foreign nationals are trapped on Friday, April 21, despite calls from the UN and many embassies.
Plumes of black smoke, soldiers and militiamen terrorizing the city. There are already hundreds of deaths in Sudan. The civilian population is holed up at home. Several people are trapped in the middle of the fighting. Abusufyan, a Franco-Sudanese national, reports that fighting took place downstairs from his home. In his neighborhood, he has had no water for several days. “(…) We take the risk just to fetch water because we have no other solution”he confides.
About 300 French would be trapped on the spot
There are five million inhabitants in Khartoum (Sudan), but the streets are almost deserted. “We were forced to regroup in a small corridor, our nephews and our grandchildren, they are incredibly terrified”says a resident reached by telephone. It’s a war for power in Sudan, a fierce fight between two generals: the chief of the regular army and the leader of a powerful militia. 1,500 European nationals are in Sudan, including about 300 French.
