At least 170 French people have left Haiti, plunged into chaos and extreme violence. Transported by helicopter to a navy vessel which is now heading towards Fort-de-France, in Martinique, they should arrive Friday March 29.

At least 170 French people have left Haiti, plunged into chaos and extreme violence. Transported by helicopter to a navy vessel which is now heading towards Fort-de-France, in Martinique, they should arrive Friday March 29.
It was the only possible outcome for them. With the Port-au-Prince (Haiti) airport closed, 170 French nationals and 70 Europeans were evacuated aboard a military helicopter. The rotations, which began on the evening of Sunday March 24, are orchestrated by the French army. They are then dropped off at sea, on a navy helicopter carrier, to reach Fort-de-France in Martinique, which they should reach on Friday.
Haiti descends into chaos
On board, volunteers, primarily vulnerable, elderly or under medical treatment, accompanied by their families. “There was an exponential rise in violence, with gang attacks in different places”testifies a man. “We really felt under increasing threat”, confides a woman for her part. Day after day, Haiti sinks deeper into chaos and extreme violence. Daily attacks are perpetrated by gangs waging a merciless war.
