French fishermen fear that the British will soon impose new restrictions on fishing in Jersey. Some still have not been able to obtain a license and are turning to other fishing grounds.
He still has not received his license to fish in Jersey (United Kingdom). After several months of hope, Alain Laurenti expects nothing more from the negotiations. He had his boat built last year but due to his lack of a license, a large part of his fishing is suspended. He announces “30% less turnover over the year” and will focus on other fishing areas. Another fisherman has his license. He would like to buy a new boat because the current one is too old, too narrow. But his license being attached to his boat, if he changes it, he will no longer be authorized to fish in Jersey.
For fishermen, part of their future is played out this weekend. The ultimatum expires on Friday December 10 and negotiations on fishing quotas open on Sunday. Despite their license in hand, some fishermen fear the British will impose new restrictions. The latter announced Thursday evening that they did not recognize the deadline set by France and the European Union. With or without a license, the future of fishermen looks a little more complicated every day.
