French fishermen left behind

After weeks of negotiations between France and the United Kingdom, some French fishermen still do not have the right to fish in British waters.

For some fishermen, as in Granville (Manche), the boats will remain at the quayside again and will not be able to reach British waters to fish. This is the case of Guillaume Lenoir, fisherman. “Assessment of the operation: all they have done for practically a year, is the show off”, says the fisherman. A wait that could go on indefinitely, as the Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin explained, Thursday, November 18: some fishermen may not obtain the famous license.

The ideas of financial compensation or plans for exiting the fleet have been put forward in particular to help French fishermen who do not have one of the 150 licenses not granted by the United Kingdom. a “abandonment of the fight” according to Pierre Vogel, patron-fisherman in Saint-Malo. An abandonment that would probably not offset the gains made by fishing in British waters, representing a quarter of the catches by French fishermen. Negotiations are still continuing between the two countries.
