French fishermen launched several operations on the morning of Friday, November 26, in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), Ouistreham (Calvados) and Calais (Pas-de-Calais), aimed at blocking boats from Grande -Brittany.
For an hour, a dozen boats blocked the entrance to the port of Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) to English ships. French fishermen are asking for more licenses to work in British waters. “What we are asking politicians today, explains one of them to his counterpart across the Channel, is to give us the opportunity to find life together.”
Similar actions are expected in the ports of Ouistreham (Calvados) and of Calais (Pas-de-Calais), to regularize the situation of 150 fishermen. “It’s an intolerable situation”, proclaims Olivier Leprêtre, president of the Hauts-de-France regional fisheries committee. Since January 1, 2021, British imported products have access to the European market, while our fishermen do not have access to British waters. Some fishermen show a loss of turnover of up to 40%. Access to the Channel Tunnel for goods will also be occupied by fishermen. This is where 25% of trade between the UK and Europe passes.
