Fires continue to ravage Canada, Monday, July 17. The fires are still out of control. 10 million hectares burned, the size of Portugal. French firefighters are on site to lend a hand to their colleagues.

Exhausted, but proud of the work accomplished. French firefighters, as reinforcements in Quebec (Canada), supported their Canadian colleagues for weeks. They will soon be taken over by new teams from France. A few days before the start and while the fight is not over, they remain impressed by these North American fires. “What struck us was the scale of the fires. To give you an idea, we are currently on a fire that covers 110,000 hectares”says Colonel Philippe Sansa, head of the French detachment in Quebec.

100,000 km2 of forests gone up in smoke

Although fires are still active in Quebec, the situation is now under control thanks to impressive international cooperation. Firefighters also arrived from the United States. Even they were stunned by the scale of the fires. The fire front is even more worrying on the west coast at the edge of the Pacific. Nearly 380 fires ravage the province of British Columbia. In total, across Canada, nearly 100,000 km2 of forests have gone up in smoke.
