Attendance in French cinemas is at its lowest. Last September, the film sector recorded 7,380,000 admissions, the worst figure for 40 years.

In a campaign clip, the Minister of Culture Rima Abdul-Malak, in person, takes the stage to seduce and bring the French back to cinemas. She is accompanied by her predecessor, Jack Lang.

The French are turning away from dark rooms for several reasons. “The place at the cinema is expensive, then afterwards you have to buy popcorn, sweets, drinks”says a woman, Saturday, October 29.

“Since access to platforms, it somewhat reduces the desire to go to the cinema”, explains a man. With the plethora of offers offered by streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Disney + and Amazon Prime, viewers have become accustomed to staying at home. Added to this is a film industry still in the grip of its shutdown during the Covid-19 crisis.
