French and P’tit Belliveau

In The duty of April 26, I read three articles raising the threats surrounding French: Christian Rioux, “Sale times for French”, an interview by Jean-François Nadeau with the linguist Lionel Meney, “The sinking of French, the triumph of English: language adrift” and the editorial by Marie-Andrée Chouinard, “En français, s’il vous plait”. There is reason to worry.

Then, in the same edition of the newspaper, I read an article on the Nova Scotia singer P’tit Belliveau. His music, I quote, has “everything in between “, ” It is weird. But againthat’s not my goal”, “something that excites me that’s not much anymore “. He likes frogs because they “just look dumb, silly, then slimy “. The pieces are called Comfy, Ring ring, Big truck

P’tit Belliveau can talk as he wants. It’s his business. He comes from an environment where French is in survival mode among an English majority. But I can’t help but think that if we’re not careful, we’ll go through this kind of stage before throwing in the towel for good.
