The freedom to have an abortion is now officially guaranteed by the Constitution. A sealing ceremony took place on Friday March 8, Place Vendôme in Paris, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron.
The freedom to abort was enshrined in the Constitution on Friday March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day. “It’s a great moment, it’s a great day.”, says Jany Gouttraux, retired. A little after noon, the President of the Republic arrived in Paris, Place Vendôme, for the start of the sealing ceremony. A film retracing the major stages of the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy, from Gisèle Halimi to Simone Veil, was shown to the public.
A Marseillaise reinterpreted
Éric Dupond-Moretti, the Minister of Justice, also Keeper of the Seals, then pressed the great seal of the Republic and associated it with the new article of constitutional law. The freedom to have an abortion is officially guaranteed by the French Constitution. Emmanuel Macron now wants to include it in the charter of fundamental rights of the European Union. Catherine Ringer concluded the ceremony with a Marseillaise reinterpreted for the occasion.
