Freedom !, Jennifer Dalrymple and Justine Brax

Harriet Tubman was born a slave in “1820 or possibly 1822 in Dorchester County, southeastern Maryland in the United States”. At 28, thirsty for justice and freedom, she decides to flee hell. Following the Big Dipper, she takes the underground route, this Underground Railroad which leads north and arrives on the other side, on the Promised Land. Freed from the yoke, she subsequently contributed to the liberation of several oppressed until the Civil War which ended slavery without however abolishing segregation. Told to the “I” by the heroine, the story highlights all the strength and courage of these “conductors” who guided the “passengers” to the North, of this resistance formed by whites and blacks. united in this desire to change the course of history. True duty of memory, the story is illustrated by Justine Brax. Sketches, taken from newspapers and archives, alternate with sumptuous paintings which extend the scope of the story. The large format also suits the immensity of the subject, the effort of this woman and so many others who have walked to freedom.
