“Freedom Convoy” | A group close to the movement creates tensions in Ottawa

(Ottawa) An Ottawa-based group suspected of having links to the so-called “freedom convoy” says it has been threatened with deportation and is ready to take its case to court to try to establish its headquarters in the country’s capital.

The organization, which calls itself The United People of Canada, moved into a desecrated church in downtown Ottawa this summer as part of a conditional offer to purchase the space.

William Komer, who sits on the group’s board, said the members called police on Wednesday night after the landlord’s agent showed up and tried unsuccessfully to evict them from the building.

Neighbors protested the group’s presence in the community, seeing it as an opportunity for convoy supporters to establish a permanent outpost in Ottawa.

The group says it has no connection to the protest that denounced health restrictions and the Trudeau government in February, although several board members have ties to the “freedom convoy” movement.

An active property listing for the building is currently posted online.
