“The film lasts three hours, less than a certain football final”, laughs director Rodrigo Moreno before launching his film Los Delincuentesa feel good movie, a film that does good, slightly amoral.

The message got through, even for non-footballers, memories of a France-Argentina final in 2022. The director savors his pleasure. The film took him five years to complete. “So, three hours…”. Yes, three hours is nothing, time flies. Los Delincuentes, or the criminals in French, is in theaters on March 27.

Los Delincuentes is a modern tale about freedom. What is the price to pay ? Three and a half years, according to Román, who had the idea of robbing his own bank in Buenos Aires. It was that or working for 25 years with the same employer, holding the same position, repeating the same actions, until the point of boredom. But Román is worn out by monotony. Román has dreams that have nothing to do with his profession.

To carry out his plan, Román needs Morán, a fundamentally honest colleague. Between seduction and intimidation, Morán gives in. Now they are linked. What to do with the money? Morán, played by an inspired Esteban Bigliardi, develops a physical revulsion: he cannot leave the wads of cash at home. He becomes ill.

The price of freedom

A remake of Crime and Punishment ? Rodrigo Moreno prefers to open up other horizons, explore other lands. His characters discover, almost in spite of themselves, freedom. They journey, each in their own way, towards unknown shores. Both of them, clumsy, discover love, true love. They advance into unknown territory, leaving behind them a life regulated like a metronome.

There are prisons without walls and bars. Just like there are jails that look like waiting rooms, on the way to a better life. The Argentine director questions social determinism and mental prisons. What if happiness was found in the mountains, far from the city? What if the injunction to possess people and property was only an illusion? Who are the real offenders?

Rodrigo Moreno demonstrates, if necessary, that South American cinema is in the midst of a revival, more alive than ever. Los Delincuentes, a resolutely optimistic and cheerful film.
