Free contraception for women under 25 from January 2022

In order to facilitate the access of young women to contraception, the full coverage of the costs related to contraception from January 1, 2022 will concern all women up to the age of 25 and no longer only minors, as this is currently the case. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, on September 9, 2021.

The extension of free contraception to young women under 25 is motivated by the decline in contraceptive use, often linked to financial reasons.

From January 1, 2022, the Health Insurance will cover 100% and without advance of costs, the cost of contraception and the procedures related to it (one consultation per year with a doctor or a midwife and examinations potential biologicals).

3 million young women are affected by this measure.

Who can currently benefit from free contraceptive fees?

Contraception is currently free for minors. It has been used since 2013 for young girls aged 15 to 18 and since January 2020, for minors under the age of 15.

In practice, young underage women can have free access to different types of contraception (1st or 2nd generation hormonal pills, hormonal contraceptive implant, IUD, hormonal emergency contraception), medical or midwifery consultations, examinations or medical procedures related to contraception.

To know : This does not apply to male and female condoms, spermicidal creams, patches, vaginal rings and 3rd and 4th generation pills.
