Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman added another depth player to his squad on Sunday, signing forward Christian Fischer to a one-year contract, who will earn $1.125 million in 2023-24.
Fischer scored 13 goals and 14 assists in 80 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season.
The signing of Fischer adds to the many acquisitions made when the free agent market opened on Saturday. The Wings kingpin has added two experienced defensemen in Justin Holl and Shayne Gostisbehere, who will stabilize the defensive squad.
With his offensive flair, Gostisbehere will be able to render valuable services to the Red Wings on the power play. In 2022-2023, he banked 41 points, including 13 goals, in 75 games.
As for Holl, his defensive versatility will be very useful for his future team, especially on the penalty kill. Last year, he finished second in blocked shots with 139 for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The team already have two top backs in Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot.
An explosive attack
Already having a well-stocked attack, the Michigan team has added two offensive elements that will give it depth.
They are JT Compher and Daniel Sprong. The two players had the best season of their careers, amassing 52 and 46 points respectively during the last campaign. These two skaters can also be used in all sauces.
Last year, Yzerman was busy on the first day of the free agent market. He signed forwards Andrew Copp and David Perron, in addition to Chiarot.
Despite these signings, Detroit still missed the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season. Derek Lalonde’s men finished the campaign with a 35-37-10 record, finishing seventh and second to last in the Atlantic Division.
