Free adoptions at the Montreal SPCA this Monday

Animal lovers, be warned: the Montreal SPCA will cover adoption costs on Monday, October 9 to find as many families as possible for its furry and feathered residents. Cats, dogs, rabbits and fish will be offered for adoption.

The Montreal SPCA shelter is overflowing. Since the start of the year, the organization has collected an average of 1,212 animals per month, the SPCA said in a press release on Thursday. Inflation and difficulty finding accommodation that accepts animals are among the most common reasons given for abandonments.

To encourage the matching of as many animals as possible with new families, the organization has decided to cover the adoption costs for one day, Monday, October 9.

You can come on site, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 5215, rue Jean-Talon Ouest in Montreal, very close to the Namur metro station.

Animals offered for adoption have seen a veterinarian. In the case of dogs and cats, they are sterilized, microchipped and have received treatment against parasites, a basic vaccine, and the rabies vaccine for dogs. Rabbits are also sterilized, specifies the SPCA.

Please note that adopters must still follow the SPCA’s adoption procedures. In particular, they will meet adoption advisors who will ensure that the families meet the animal’s needs. In some cases, an animal better suited to their lifestyle may be offered.

Expenses to expect

Taking care of a new feathered and furry companion has a cost on the wallet, also reminds the SPCA. “According to the Association of Veterinary Doctors of Quebec (AMVQ), the average annual cost of caring for a cat is $2,400; for a dog, it varies between $2700 and $3400; for a rabbit, you have to plan on average $1,500 per year,” we can read in the press release.

Expenses include food, annual physical, vaccinations, parasite treatments, occasional dental care, and treatment in case of injury or illness, etc.

Do you want to adopt an animal on Monday? Don’t forget to bring identification and a transport cage (one is available for sale at the shelter shop).

Although adoption is free on October 9, donations are still accepted at the SPCA.
