The Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, believes that Ottawa must make compulsory – and not voluntary, as Ottawa proposes – the relocation of asylum seekers. And this would also apply to those who are already in the territory, he clarified.
“What I want is for there to be results. So, yes, it is mandatory, but it is up to the federal government to manage that,” said Mr. Legault during a press scrum in the offices of the General Delegation of Quebec in Paris.
Mr. Legault specified that he is calling for the transfer of “half of the asylum seekers currently in Quebec” to other provinces. And, according to him, here again, Ottawa could “take inspiration from France”.
He maintains that “it is not logical” that Quebec received 45% of asylum seekers when the province only has 22% of the Canadian population.
The day before, Mr. Legault confirmed that his government had asked Ottawa to establish “waiting zones” for asylum seekers as is done in France.
