François Gemenne, climate specialist and lead author of the sixth report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), welcomes an agreement on Wednesday December 13 on France Inter “almost historic” And “ambitious” at COP28. “We must not overuse words, it is almost historic. We are still drawing a largely carbon-free future for fossil fuels. I think few would have bet on such an ambitious agreement”he reacted.

“Undeniably, there are still a whole series of weak points in the agreement,” tempered François Gémenne. “That being said, let’s look at where we come from, let’s look at the compromise which is quite historic. Let’s realize that we are here in the United Arab Emirates and that we are going to sign the exit from fossil fuels.

“It’s as if France gave up on cinema and gastronomy!”

“In terms of pure diplomacy, it is still a tour de force to have succeeded in bringing together all the countries, including the countries at war, on a trajectory for the post-fossil future, and it is really important”added François Gemenne.

The countries participating in COP28 agreed, Wednesday, December 13, on a final text which calls for a “transition away from fossil fuels” to fight against global warming. This text aims to accelerate action “in this crucial decade, in order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050”.
