François Fillon was sentenced on appeal to a one-year prison term on Monday, May 9, in the case of his wife’s fictitious jobs. The former Prime Minister immediately decided to appeal to the Court of Cassation.

François Fillon, sentenced Monday, May 9, to a one-year prison term, decided to appeal to the Court of Cassation. “The Fillon spouses did not wait to appeal to the Court of Cassation. Their lawyers are even attacking the defence”, indicates journalist Hugo Puffeney, live from the Paris court. The latter denounced, in a press release, “significant legal issues” and “unfair conduct of the proceedings”.

The appeal has immediate effect and suspends the penal sanctions. “This means that for the moment François Fillon will not serve his sentence, he remains eligible and he is not required for the moment to wear an electronic bracelet”, reports Hugo Puffeney. However, the payment of damages is not suspended. The convicts owe around 800,000 euros to the National Assembly, recalls the journalist.
