François Fillon was sentenced on appeal, Monday, May 9, to one year in prison and three years suspended, in the case of the fictitious employment of his wife, who receives a two-year suspended sentence. The couple will appeal in cassation.

François Fillon, absent on Monday, May 9, during his trial, was sentenced to four years in prison, including one year, for having illegally employed his wife as parliamentary attaché, while he was deputy for Sarthe. Penelope Fillon, also absent, was given a two-year suspended prison sentence.

François and Penelope Fillon must also each pay a fine of 375,000 euros, as in the first instance. The Court of Appeal, on the other hand, released the damages for the period before 2002. For that going from 2002 to 2012, the couple will have to pay more than 800,000 euros to the National Assembly. “When remuneration is paid without consideration, it must be returned”, believes Me Yves Claisse, the lawyer representing the National Assembly. François Fillon immediately appealed. He challenges the judgment and asks for a third trial.
