If Emmanuel Macron said he was in favor during the 2022 presidential campaign, the measure did not appear in his re-election program.

The fight of a lifetime. The president of MoDem, François Bayrou, once again pleaded, on Sunday March 24, for proportional representation in the legislative elections, raising the possibility of a referendum to have this modification of the electoral law adopted. This is a historic demand from the MoDem, meeting in a congress this weekend in Blois (Loir-et-Cher).

“I am convinced that we will get there. That after so many years of fighting, so many difficulties to make the obvious heard, a window has opened and that we will be able to find a resolution to this question which is vital for the future of French democracy”, declared François Bayrou during his speech at the conclusion of the congress, which re-elected him for three years as party president. And “if those in charge ever have difficulty being convinced, there is a very simple way to convince them: give the French people a voice”he added.

“Reconnect with our democratic promise”

The President (Renaissance) of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, also took up this question, launching a “call to reconnect with our original democratic promise, that made by the President of the Republic”. She advocates the establishment of proportional representation in departments with at least 11 deputies, and the maintenance of majority voting in other departments.

The introduction of a dose of proportionalism appeared in the constitutional revision abandoned in 2018 and 2019. If Emmanuel Macron said he was in favor of it during the 2022 presidential campaign, the measure did not appear in his re-election program.
