Franco Gatti, of the group Ricchi e poveri, co-interpreter of the hit “Sarà perché ti amo”, is dead

The group represented Italy at Eurovision in 1978 and won the San Remo Italian Song Festival in 1985, an institution on the peninsula that captivates millions of fans every year.

The Italian singer and composer Franco Gatti, performer of the hit Sarà perched ti amo with the group Ricchi e poveri, died at the age of 80, announced Tuesday October 18 the family of the singer and the group to the Italian national press agency, ANSA. “Part of our life is gone. Ciao Franco.”

Franco Gatti had had health problems for several years and retired from the music scene in 2013, after the death of his son Alessio.

The group Ricchi and poveriborn in the 60s in Genoa, rose to fame in Italy and abroad in the 70s and 80s, selling more than 20 million records during his career.

The title Sarà perché ti amo (It must be because I love you), released in 1981, would appear four years later on the film’s soundtrack The Cheeky by Claude Miller with Charlotte Gainsbourg. The band had other big hits, like Che sarà, Se m’innamoro, La prima cosa bella, Mamma Maria and Would you like to dance.

The group had organized a big reunion in 2020 with a return to the stage of the Sanremo Festival, on the occasion of the 50 years of song The Prima Cosa Bella and their first participation in the festival in 1970.
