Let’s start with an important clarification. What is prohibited from July 1 is the installation of a new oil-fired boiler. You cannot therefore replace your old oil-fired boiler with an identical one if it fails you. But if it works, you can continue to use it. And if it breaks down, you can have it repaired too. You are therefore not at all obliged to dispose of it early. Only the installation of a new traditional oil-fired boiler is prohibited.

However, we must prepare for their gradual disappearance. In France, there are still around three million oil-fired boilers. The prohibition decree provides for some derogations, in particular for people who are far from any network or who could not easily connect to it. But these will remain exceptions.

The majority of owners must therefore consider adopting another mode of heating: efficient gas boiler, heat pump, wood boiler, connection to a heating network, solar heating. Financial aid is available to finance this less polluting equipment.

Failing this, individuals can consider installing a boiler running on biofuel. This is a new fuel oil which contains 70% conventional fuel oil and 30% rapeseed. This mixture is below the bar to be respected for greenhouse gas emissions. Problem: this F30 biofuel is more expensive. A 15% surcharge is announced. It is also not really “organic”. It still contains a lot of fuel. As for the rapeseed part, agricultural land is used to produce fuels instead of food, which is debatable. Be that as it may, biofuel will be a solution for those who cannot do otherwise.

Good to know to conclude: the burner of a boiler must in principle be replaced once in the life of a boiler. If this happens to you, it is worth replacing it with a burner compatible with biofuel so that you can continue to use it while polluting less.
