They are kings in Europe. The French Léo Bergère, Emma Lombardi, Dorian Coninx and Cassandre Beaugrand won gold in the mixed triathlon relay on Sunday August 14 in Munich (Germany), during the European Championships. The Blues were well ahead of Germany and Switzerland, in this format made up of four relays of 300 meters swimming, 7.2 km cycling and 1.6 km running.
12 seconds from the lead after swimming, Léo Bergère gradually caught up with the leaders on the bike, before Emma Lombardi took first place during her stint. Starting with a 36-second lead over his Swiss pursuer, Dorian Coninx increased the French lead to 49 seconds when handing over to Cassandre Beaugrand. The Frenchwoman brilliantly concluded the race and crossed the finish line, 33 seconds before the German, who sowed her Swiss competitor during the run.
A great conclusion for the Habs, the day after a historic hat-trick for the men and two days after Emma Lombardi’s bronze medal. “This is the icing on the cake”, reacted to the microphone of France Télévisions, Léo Bergère, individual European champion. Cassandre Beaugrand, who only finished fifth in the women’s event, was keen to get on the podium: “I wanted my medal, too. When I saw them debut, I said to myself: ‘They are incredible’, I will have to ensure.”
