No group of death this time for the Blues. Seeded for this Euro 2024 draw, carried out on Saturday December 2, France was placed in Group D, alongside Austria, the Netherlands and the winner of Path A of the play-offs ( Wales, Finland, Poland or Estonia). They will begin their competition with a match against Austria on June 17 in Düsseldorf (Germany).
The Tricolores will then follow up with a shock in Leipzig, on June 21 against the Netherlands, the Blues’ biggest opponent in this group, whom they had already encountered during the qualifiers. They will finish their group stage in Dortmund, against the barrage, on June 25.
Reigning world vice-champions, the Blues will be among the big favorites for this Euro 2024, three years after their surprise elimination in the round of 16 against Switzerland at Euro 2021. As a reminder, the first two in each group will be directly qualified for the round of 16, as well as the four best third-placed teams from the six groups. Euro 2024 kicks off on June 14 in Munich.
Italy, Spain and Croatia in the group of death
“A difficult, dense group”, this is how Didier Deschamps summarized this draw for the Blues at the microphone of TF1, while waiting to know the identity of the third opponent. Present in the France group during qualifying for this Euro, the Dutch lost twice against the Blues, but Didier Deschamps tempers it: “Both times they were missing important players.u complete they are one of the best European nations. At the World Cup, they came close to eliminating Argentina.”
Whatever happens, France is doing better than Spain anyway, placed in the death group with Italy, Croatia and Albania. Another attractive group: C, with England, Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia. Host country, Germany is doing well with Hungary, Scotland and Switzerland on the menu. The opening match will pit the Germans against the Hungarians on June 14 in Munich.
