Paris is preparing tools that will make it possible to no longer buy raw materials that would contribute to deforestation. This commitment dates back to 2018. France then promised to put an end by 2030 to the importation of products leading to the destruction of forests, wood and all derived products, a constraint enshrined in the climate law. Zero deforestation imported in the public purchases of the State and which Paris intends to defend when it takes the head of the Union for six months at the beginning of next year.
This stems from a global desire in favor of forest areas, wherever they are found in the world, starting with Europe in general, and France in particular, at a time of globalization. This raw material, oaks in particular, is exported for transformation and it comes back to us from Asia by freighters and whole containers transformed into furniture, prefabricated kitchens and other ready-to-use boards. In addition to the short circuits which are neglected, there is the negative impact on the trees as such, especially oaks whose number is decreasing each year.
The French forest covers fifteen to sixteen million hectares, it is the fourth in Europe. Paradoxically, it suffers from its diversity: made up of around 130 species, the French forest is a real environmental wealth but is very expensive to maintain. The sector employs 400,000 people in France (by way of comparison, there are 900,000 employees in Germany).
Better recognition from public authorities is welcome. As the professionals say about wood exports from our forests to China: “We can no longer consider that the countryside is a supermarket for a globalization without faith or law”. The French presidency of the European Union for six months from January 1 is therefore supposed to provide concrete answers.
