Despite the images of reconciliation between France and the United States in Rome (Italy), there is still a lot of work to be done. Guillaume Daret, special envoy, explains the Franco-American situation.
If Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden shook hands in Rome (Italy), the affront of the Australian submarine crisis is not yet completely erased. “We are rebuilding confidence,” said Emmanuel Macron after his interview with Joe Biden. The relationship between France and the United States still has a little way to go. Indeed, France wants the United States to take strong decisions in the future.
France will now wait to see if the Americans will take concrete measures such as the fight against jihadism in the Sahel, the environment or in the common European defense project. However, Emmanuel Macron remains lucid and is aware that in the coming months American and French interests may diverge. A divergence of interest which still makes this process of rebuilding confidence between France and the EUnited States.
