After years of hesitation, France made a turn and launched several projects aimed at manufacturing drones capable of carrying explosive charges over a long distance.
Some call them kamikaze drones, others prowl munitions. France is in the process of acquiring these flying machines, which carry explosives. The war has shown their effectiveness. Some crash into their targets, others drop their charge. The most successful project in France is that of the Sky Carrier drone: it will be able to carry up to 35 kg of load, over a distance of 10 km.
France says no to artificial intelligence
Some of these future French army drones are valued at 20,000 euros each, a relatively modest cost. France wants to catch up in this area. The Ministry of Defense has however set itself a red line: no drone that opens fire without human intervention. “We will never have a machine that will choose on its own to kill someone“, explains Xavier Tytelman, defense consultant at Air&Cosmos.
