France is giving itself extra time to negotiate with the UK on post-Brexit fishing licenses. En the sidelines of the COP26 in Glasgow, Emmanuel Macron declared on Monday November 1 that he wanted “give a chance” to discussions with London. A ministerial meeting, to which the British Secretary of State for Brexit, David Frost, is invited, will be held on Thursday in Paris, specified the Elysee in the evening. The French president gave up on applying retaliatory measures against the United Kingdom on Tuesday because “It is not while we are negotiating that we will impose sanctions”.
Since the entry into force of Brexit, London and Paris have been clashing over the number of licenses granted to French fishermen. Paris is threatening to ban British fishing vessels from unloading their cargoes in French ports and to tighten customs controls on all trucks if London does not grant more licenses to French fishermen.
“Since this afternoon, discussions have resumed on the basis of the proposal I made to the Prime Minister” Briton, Boris Johnson, added the French head of state. “I hope we can find a favorable outcome. The next few hours are important”, added the French president.
In the process, the British government welcomed the postponement of French sanctions. “We welcome France’s recognition that in-depth discussions are needed to resolve all the difficulties in the UK-EU relationship.”, said the British government.
