Wednesday February 7, in the main courtyard of the Invalides in Paris, the notes of Kaddish by Maurice Ravel resonated. This mourning song is originally a Jewish prayer. Tribute was paid to the 42 French victims of the October 7 attacks. Many families came from Israel. During the tribute, three empty chairs represented the three French hostages kidnapped by Hamas and still missing. Emmanuel Macron denounced the “largest anti-Semitic massacre of our century”.
The deadliest attack since 2016
The attack on October 7 is the deadliest for France since the attacks in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) in 2016. France is the only nation that organized such a ceremony. “It’s the recognition, the formalization, the support of France”, indicates Olivier Jaoui, member of a family of victims. At the same time, in Tel Aviv (Israel), the crowd watched the broadcast on the big screen with the same contemplation and with the same desire not to forget.
