This is bad news for French producers. Due to bad weather conditions, wine production fell in France, placing the country as the 3rd largest producer in the world, behind Italy and Spain.
France was demoted to third place among wine producing countries by the International Organization of Vine and Wine. Bad news for producers. “Mother Nature has not really been kind to French wine producers. They had it all: frost in spring, mildew [un parasite] and then the drought“, explains Anne Sylvain, journalist for France Télévisions. Only 34.2 million hectoliters of wine were produced in France, a decrease of 27% compared to 2020.
The bad weather conditions also affected the neighboring countries of France, but to a lesser extent. Result: the Italians are the largest wine producers in the world, with 44.5 million hectoliters produced in 2021, ahead of the Spaniards, who have a production of 35 million hectoliters. In the rest of the world, foreign producers have experienced strong growth, especially in Brazil where growth has exploded: + 60%. France remains, however, the number one wine-selling country in the world.
