France | Jonathan David scores a hat trick

(Villeneuve-D’ascq) Canadian international Jonathan David scored a hat-trick to allow Lille to win 3-0 against Le Havre on Saturday in Ligue 1 soccer.

The 24-year-old from Ottawa took his tally to 11 league goals, tied for second behind PSG star Kylian Mbappé’s 20 goals.

David, who has 16 goals in all competitions, left the pitch at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium to the applause of the crowd, at the 75e minute.

Lille opened the scoring in the 13the minute following a free kick. Le Havre goalkeeper Arthur Desmas made a nice save with one hand to prevent a header from the set piece. However, he could do no better than send the ball in the direction of David, who had been left unguarded and who did not miss the opportunity.

David doubled the lead at 43e minute, beating Demas with a delicate strike after being launched behind the defense by Angel Gomes.

The Canadian completed his hat trick from the penalty spot in the 48the minute.

A diving Desmas got in the way of David’s shot, but couldn’t stop him from putting the rebound into the back of the net.

This victory allows Lille to climb to third place in the Ligue 1 standings (10-8-4). Le Havre is 12e (5-9-8).

David scored 26 goals in 45 caps for Canada.
