The president of the Hauts-de-France region, Xavier Bertrand, is worried about seeing the English dump their wastewater into the Channel. There would have been 370,000 spills last year according to the British Environment Agency.

The coastline is invaded by brown expanses, which nibble the turquoise of the sea on significant surfaces. These scenes are almost daily in the United Kingdom, and France wants to remedy it. These abundant discharges come from untreated British sewage. These are the ones that come from toilets and showers through the sewers. According to an association, this summer alone, 171 points on the coast were affected, sometimes several times.

Swimming is therefore prohibited because of this pollution. On the other side of the Channel, France is worried, because the discharges could reach Normandy, and more surely Pas-de-Calais with the currents. This constitutes a breach of the law of the sea, according to MEPs. Faced with the controversy, the British government announced on Saturday August 27 the end of discharges into the sea of untreated wastewater by 2020.
