France will increase its contribution to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) by a third this year to bring it to 120 million euros, announced the head of French diplomacy, Catherine Colonna, in Geneva, Wednesday December 13. France “will endeavor to maintain it at this level in 2024”she declared at the opening of the UN Forum on Refugees, which France co-sponsors with Colombia, Japan, Jordan and Uganda.

“France will therefore continue to support the UNHCR and has decided to triple its financial contribution in three years as it had committed to doing.” insisted the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2022, this contribution was 91.6 million and around 30 million three years ago, according to figures from the Quai d’Orsay.

As crises and conflicts multiply around the world, more than 114 million people were displaced at the end of September, a record, according to the UNHCR. And the global refugee population has doubled over the past seven years, reaching 36.4 million people by mid-2023, a new record. This represents an increase of 3% compared to the end of 2022.
