The climate conference, where the minister is going from Friday, could mention for the first time the role of fossil fuels in its final agreement and urge its participants to get rid of them.

France wants “a trajectory and an exit date for fossil fuels”announced Christophe Béchu, Minister of Ecological Transition, Wednesday December 6 in the program “Planète info” on franceinfo, as he went to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) on Friday where COP28 is being held until December 12 .

The climate conference could mention for the first time the role of fossil fuels in its final agreement and urge its participants to get rid of them, while the consumption of oil, coal and gas is largely responsible for global warming . “When there is a COP in Dubai, the boss of an oil company is the president of this COP [Sultan al-Jaber, directeur d’Adnoc, la compagnie pétrolière nationale], the negotiations are of another nature”judged the minister, recognizing that “the circumstances, location and manner in which this COP is chaired” are not the best signals for “have the most ambitious agreement”.

“We are going to seek the most ambitious agreement on the exit from fossil fuels, but we are not waiting for others to agree to plan our own ecological transition, neither in Europe nor in France”, promised Christophe Béchu. While the question of the exit from fossil fuels should animate this end of COP, thehe 150 participating States have already agreed on a fund to compensate for the “loss and damage” of countries victims of climate disasters, one of the main challenges of this COP28. They thus achieved the main result of the 2022 COP27 in Egypt, during which this fund was approved in principle.
