(Paris) French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday appointed former right-wing minister and former European Commissioner Michel Barnier, 73, as prime minister, the Élysée Palace announced, 60 days after legislative elections that resulted in a National Assembly without a majority in France.
The oldest prime minister of the Ve République thus succeeds Gabriel Attal, 35, who was the youngest, as head of government. He will have to try to form a government that can survive a parliamentary censure, to put an end to the most serious political crisis of the last fifty years.
