(Paris) A deputy from La France insoumise (LFI, radical left), Sébastien Delogu, brandished a Palestinian flag in the Assembly hemicycle on Tuesday in Paris, during a question to the government on the situation in the strip of Gaza, which earned him a 15-day exclusion.
The President of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, elected from the presidential camp, denounced “unacceptable” behavior. Faced with the uproar, she suspended the session.
When he resumed, Mme Braun-Pivet announced that she was “immediately” calling a meeting to “rule on Mr. Delogu’s case.” For his action, the opposition representative was excluded from the Assembly for 15 days.
Its regulations provide for sanctions against any member “who engages in demonstrations disturbing order or who provokes a tumultuous scene”.
Questioned by the press, Mr. Delogu affirmed that his gesture was a “personal initiative”.
It came on the day that three European countries, Spain, Ireland and Norway, officially recognized the State of Palestine.
During the session on Tuesday, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was asked about this regarding France, but dodged, without answering the question.
“Yes or no, will the French government finally recognize the State of Palestine? », Asked the leader of the environmentalist deputies, Cyrielle Chatelain.
LFI has put the issue of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza at the center of its campaign for the European election.
