On the occasion of World Oceans Day, this Thursday, June 8, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres called for greater action to protect them. This is the subject of Talk franceinfo. Every evening from 6 p.m., Manon Mella and her guests debate with Internet users on the franceinfo Twitch channel.

Like every June 8, World Oceans Day is an opportunity to remember the crucial role played by the “lung of the planet”. Indeed, the oceans are proving to be a vital buffer against the effects of climate change. The preservation of these fragile ecosystems that make up the marine space is therefore increasingly considered a major environmental and political issue. In addition, the oceans are at the heart of an international competition which distributes halieutic, biological or even energy reserves.

Ludovic Pauchant receives Julia Mugresearcher at the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) and head of the “Climate, energy and security” program as well as Joachim Claudetmarine ecologist, CNRS research director at CRIOBE.

Towards a maritimization of the world

Nearly 100% of digital transmissions are carried out using submarine cables, 90% of commercial exchanges by volume pass by sea: the oceans cover considerable economic, digital and military issues. In addition, scientific research shows that the oceans, if they suffer the consequences of climate change, also help to cushion them.

To what extent are the oceans at the heart of global strategic challenges? How are the climatic and geopolitical issues related to the oceans? Above all, how to organize their preservation and the protection of the ecosystems they shelter?

Join us from 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the franceinfo Twitch channel to participate in Manon Mella’s Talk. An hour of exchange, clarification, debate around topical and social issues.
