Four things to know to be a COP28 pro

From November 30 to December 12, the city of Dubai will host COP28. Here’s everything you need to know about this important environmental conference.

1- What is the COP?

The COP is a big event that comes back every year. For ten days, country representatives and experts from around the world meet to try to find solutions to global warming.

We talk about COP28 because it is the 28e COP. The first took place in 1995.

2- What is it for?

The climate crisis is accelerating. All countries must make efforts to reduce their impacts on the environment.

During the COP, participants exchange, debate and must agree on a joint declaration. That is to say an action plan with objectives accepted by everyone. For example, at COP21 (in 2015), participating countries agreed to limit global warming to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius by 2100.

3- Why is it a controversial COP?

This year’s COP is being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The problem is that this country is one of the main oil producers in the world. Oil is the main source of greenhouse gases. That’s not all ! The president of COP28 runs an oil company.

All this affects the credibility of the event in the eyes of pro-environment activists

4- What will be special?

At COP28, we will present the first global assessment. It’s a bit like a very precise report card. It allows us to see where there have been improvements in the fight for the climate since COP21. It also indicates where there is no progress and where efforts need to be made.

The president of COP28 promises to respond to the global assessment with a clear action plan.

And you, if you could participate in the COP, what would you say to world leaders?
