The toll rose in Steenbecque, in the North, on Monday February 12. Four people died. They were hiking when they were hit by a car.

A rescue helicopter and several ambulances were dispatched to Steenbecque (North) on Monday February 12. Shortly before 9 a.m., four pedestrians who were on the sidewalk were hit by a car. The driver, aged around 50, was taken into police custody. “He would have dozed off at the wheel of his vehicle (…) At the time of this doze off, he would have lost control of his vehicle”indicates François-Xavier Bieuville, sub-prefect of Dunkirk.

A road limited to 30 km/h

The car’s trajectory, speed, toxicological analysis, everything will be scrutinized. This is the first time that an accident of such seriousness has occurred on this road, which is limited to 30 km/h. “This axis, here, inside the village, was not known for serious accidents,” explains Valentin Belleval, vice-president of the Departmental Council in charge of roads and infrastructure. A criminal investigation has been opened.
