Four counts brought against the attacker of the Longueuil courthouse

A 44-year-old man faces four charges, including attempted murder, after an armed attack at the Longueuil courthouse on Tuesday. Police authorities said Wednesday they still feared for the life of the victim, a 68-year-old court interpreter.

Alexandre Garcés appeared this morning at the Longueuil courthouse, police said. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. His case is due back in court on Thursday.

Court interpreter Hai Thach was transported to hospital Tuesday noon after suffering a knife wound to the upper body at the Longueuil courthouse.

Mr. Garcés was arrested on site by officers following this attack. “The investigation showed that the two men did not know each other,” however, clarified Mélanie Mercille, spokesperson for the Longueuil agglomeration police department.

Further details will follow.
