More than 30 hours after the gigantic explosion which blew up a four-storey building in Marseille, the emergency services discovered the first four bodies under the rubble. Four people are still missing.

In the collapsed building, all the bedrooms were arranged on the same side. It’s probably just below, in the part that broke away, that the buried people are. A mechanical shovel clears the rubble as quickly as possible to access the part of the rubble that has not yet been excavated. Moments of silence, listening to a sign of life. And then suddenly, a plume of smoke, a sign that the fire smoldering below resumed, further complicating the task of the firefighters.

The authorities still want to believe it

Two dead bodies were brought out of the rubble on the morning of Monday April 10, and two others a little earlier in the night. Rescue work has not stopped for 36 hours. Every minute that passes reduces the chances of finding survivors. Yet the authorities still want to believe it. A total of eight people were present in the building at the time of the explosion.

The research will only stop when all the uncertainties are removed. Alongside the rescue operations, it is also the time of the investigation. The scientific police, the Marseille public prosecutor’s office (Bouches-du-Rhône) and the gas specialists are on the site.
