Forty personalities from cinema, music and even fashion find themselves once again on the cover of the British Vogue of March 2024 to pay tribute to Edward Enninful, who signs his last issue as editor-in-chief.

From actress Jane Fonda to press boss Oprah Winfrey, singer Miley Cyrus, retired tennis player Serena Williams, transgender actress Laverne Cox and models Cara Delevingne and Gigi Hadid, they posed last December , in New York, during a memorable photo session orchestrated by Edward Enninful and his team.

The first man and first black person to take over as editor-in-chief of the magazine in 2017, the Briton of Ghanaian origin revolutionized the British Vogue by infusing it with diversity and inclusiveness during six and a half years at its head.

The man who notably worked for a better representation of black people in this magazine, whose title is a global reference in a sector where they are marginalized, is now a global creative and cultural advisor for Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue. He thus gets closer to Anna Wintour, boss of the Voque American, who had entrusted him with the reins of the little British sister.

From his first issue, Edward Enninful put his feet in the dish by choosing the British model and activist Adwoa Aboah for the cover. “The magazine was seen as a shock to the system,” he emphasizes in his editorial, because covers with non-white personalities were then considered commercially counterproductive. He thinks it’s “ridiculous” and prove it. The issue is a hit on newsstands.

Under his leadership, the magazine, which aims to be ever more inclusive, chooses to put on the cover the American actress Laverne Cox (revealed by the series Orange is the New Black). This is a first for a transgender personality.

Another idea of fashion

In the edition Forces for Change dedicated to fifteen women activists, produced in collaboration with Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, Laverne Cox then appears alongside Irishwoman Sinéad Burke, who will become the first short person to be on the cover of British Vogue. She will participate in another number called Reframing Fashion, dedicated to people with disabilities. In 2020, British actress Judi Dench is also the first octogenarian to appear on the cover of the fashion magazine.

Edward Enninful also offered covers, now iconic with the singers Beyoncé (on a stallion) and Rihanna (with a “drag”, a small accessory to tie the hair, then with her child) or even with Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist for girls’ education and women’s rights.

“Fashion is never free from the hustle and bustle of life, and sometimes our task was to provide a little lightness, beauty and distraction. At other times, I hope we didn’t afraid to tackle head-on the problems facing society”, writes Edward Enninful. The latter promised, in his new functions, “to continue to champion the incredible range of voices in fashion and media”.
