The shortage of specially formulated formula for babies with food allergies and certain medical conditions is still rife nationwide, and is expected to continue through the summer, according to Health Canada.
The federal ministry says that deliveries of special preparations should be available in pharmacies from the first week of July, but that supplies will continue to be limited.
Health Canada says there is no shortage of regular infant formula across the country.
The formula shortage comes after a massive recall of contaminated formula in February shut down Abbott Nutrition’s Michigan plant, where the formula was produced.
Abbott Nutrition manufactures the popular brands Similac and Alimentum.
In a statement, Health Canada says parents should discuss their toddler’s needs with a healthcare professional, either a doctor, registered nurse or nutritionist. They can recommend special formula alternatives and how to incorporate them into their baby’s diet.
Additionally, Health Canada is asking parents who don’t need formula not to purchase it in order to conserve supplies for babies with allergies or special medical conditions.
