Withdrawn from the field since August 2020, Iker Casillas (41) found himself at the heart of a controversy this weekend. The former Spain international goalkeeper tweeted: “I hope you’ll respect me: I’m gay”Sunday, October 9, before deleting his message and announcing the hacking of his certified account.

“Account hacked. Fortunately, everything is back to normal. Sorry to all my followers. And, of course, my apologies to the LGBT community” Casillas wrote, as his “fake” coming out sparked many reactions on social media.

Australian footballer Joshua Cavallo, who announced his homosexuality almost a year ago, protested the behavior of Iker Casillas and his former team-mate in the Spanish selection, Carles Puyol. “It’s time to tell our relationship, Iker”the former Barcelona defender ironically replied to Casillas’ first message, before apologizing “for this joke without any bad intention and absolutely irrelevant”.

“Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol joking and having fun on the subject of coming out in football, it’s sad”, regretted Joshua Cavallo. “It’s a difficult passage that anyone in the LGBTQ+ community has to go through. Seeing my role models and legends of the sport enjoying coming out and my community is beyond disrespectful “.
