“The French will decide.” Edouard Philippe, mayor of Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) and president of the Horizons party, announces that he will be “candidate for the next presidential election”in an interview with PointTuesday September 3.

The former Prime Minister of Emmanuel Macron has not yet specified his program: “I am preparing to propose things to the French. What I will propose will be massive.” He always defines himself as a “right-wing man”, while specifying: “I don’t ask myself every morning what my label is. I think that in politics, if you feel like a prisoner of your label, you don’t get very far.”

Regarding the current political situation, Edouard Philippe mentions four dangers: “a form of democratic peril”as well as a “budgetary danger (…) underestimated” : “We are deluding ourselves into thinking that we will be able to continue to get into debt because we are a rich, stable country and everyone has confidence in us.” He also mentions the risk of “immobility” which makes you forget “important topics” as “education”, “ecology” or housing, as well as the danger of “public order and security”.

From an institutional point of view, Edouard Philippe says: “very attached to the majority vote” and even envisages that only the two candidates who came out on top in the first round of the legislative elections can continue. “And if we had to move towards proportional representation, then I would only support it if the possibility of combining a local executive mandate and a parliamentary mandate was re-established.”adds the former Prime Minister.
