Jérôme Cahuzac is back in politics. Convicted of tax fraud, the former minister responsible for the Budget under the presidency of François Hollande, announced on Sunday June 9 that he will be a candidate in Lot-et-Garonne in the next legislative elections, following the dissolution of the Assembly national announced by Emmanuel Macron. The former deputy mayor of Villeneuve-sur-Lot will be “candidate under the center left label”facing the outgoing National Rally MP, Annick Cousin, in the 3rd constituency of the department, he told AFP, confirming information from The Dispatch.

“I am not dependent and I do not depend on any party”added the former elected official, aged 71, who has made his return to the political scene in Lot-et-Garonne since the fall by organizing several public meetings. “It’s clear that I’m not forbidding myself anything”he declared at the end of November on France Inter, estimating “have paid off one’s debt”.

Jérôme Cahuzac had denied “eye to eye” before deputies holding a hidden account abroad after the Mediapart revelations in 2013. Five years later, he was sentenced on appeal for tax evasion to four years in prison, two of which were suspended, and five years of ineligibility .
